Hi All,
I have a DELL Axim x50v running WM2005. It runs at 480*640. Is there
any way to change the screen resolution down to 240*320? Running
WM2003SE it runs at 240*320.

Thanks,
Richard

Richard,

AFAIK it is only VGA and will not run in QVGA.

I'm puzzled why you want to reduce the resolution. The only reason
that comes to my mind is concern that apps built for low resolution
screens will be squashed into part of the screen. But I'm quite sure
the operating system makes adjustments to let such apps "think" they
are running on a lower resolution screen, so they look the same as
before.

A number of applications, notably PIE, have limited text zoom
capabilities, so, on many web pages, there is no way to read text
without significant magnification... especially if you already need
reading glasses.

Hi All,
Thanks for the quick responses. Maybe I should explain what I am
trying to do. The X50v is a VGA device, but WM2003SE runs it as a QVGA
device and the graphics chip takes care of the pixel doubling so it
uses the full VGA LCD. I have upgraded to WM2005 and this runs at VGA.
However, it is dog slow. Given that nothing I use needs VGA
resolution, I would like, if possilbe, to try setting the res to QVGA.
In this case the graphics chip will do the pixel doubling. This should
reduce the number of pixels the CPU has to worry about by 75%.
In reality, it may make it quicker, or it may not, but if it can be
done I figure it's worth trying.

Thanks,
Richard

You are mistaken. The Axim X50V was always a VGA device, even when it
was running WM2003SE. Hence the "V" in the model number. It always ran
at a resolution of 480x640. I personally own one of these devices, and
the VGA screen was one of the reasons I purchased it. Even when I was
running WM2003SE on it, it was so easy on the eyes when using it as a
book reader.

The pixel doubling was always done by the CPU, when it was needed (for
instance, for older applications Windows Mobile will pixel double the
app to allow it to display properly).

The slow down you're seeing is largely do to the change in the file
system with WM5. The move from a RAM based file system to a flash-ROM
based file system slowed things down since writing to a flash-ROM chip
takes longer than a RAM chip does.

It's been a while since I've looked at any of this, but there are
various hacks people developed to attempt to increase speed. Many of
them are placebos, and the ones that do work inevitably make the device
less stable. The only real way to get it back like it's running WM2003SE
is to downgrade.

Not that I would presume to lend any credence to what Scott has said by my
echoing it. He is quite authoritative on his own. I'll just say that I too
found an X50v with the WM5 upgrade a dog. It was reflashed back within a
month. It is slow and killed my battery life. I was unwilling to adopt a new
hobby of keeping up with the upgraded X50v mitigation hack parade. If you
are willing, hop over to http://www.aximsite.com/ where you will find a
patch fest.

QVGA vs VGA resolution on PDA. Does the difference matter? Hi all! I've noticed that some of the Glofiish PDA's have VGA resolution, instead of the currently more common QVGA resolution.
