I'm still using a Dell Axim X5 for contacts (Pocket PC ver 3). It syncs
to Outlook on an old Windows 98se. How can I rescue these 1000's of
contacts, if I buy a smartphone which uses Windows Mobile 6? My new PC's
op sys is Vista.

Key question is what version of Outlook contains the contacts? (not
sure what version of outlook is required for wm6 and wmdc, but have
heard older outlook versions won't sync)

First, sync with the dell then backup outlook's pst file on the pc.
Worst case scenario, you can then re-import from the pst file. If you
upgrade outlook, it should import the older versions pim data then it
will sync it to the wm6 device when you establish the partnership.

How to migrate extensive list of Contacts in Dell Axim X5 (or the Outlook
copy of these Contacts on my PC) to a Windows Mobile 6 device.

Bravo, Beverly : Thanks for fast, encouraging response. I'll check the
old Outlook version; but I see a problem. The old Outlook probably won't
install to my Vista pc or vice-versa. So: if the new Outlook can read the
old pst file, I should try to make the pst file available to new the
Outlook on the Vista machine by moving it there on a flash card?
Thanks, Chazz

Once you make a copy of your current pst file (the default name is
outlook.pst) you can then copy it to your vista machine or memory card.

simply search for *.pst in file explorer ... if there is more than one
copy, you can probably determine the current one by file date.

The new version of outlook can then import the entire file which
contains everything you now have in outlook into the new install.

NEVER import Outlook data - there is no need and importing loses data.

Simply copy the file to your new Windows installation, (DO NOT OVERWRITE THE NEW PST) and open it in Outlook using file->open->outlook data file.

See http://www.outlook-tips.net/archives/2004/20040609.htm for issues caused by importing.

>> NEVER import Outlook data... <<

Guess the fact that pst imports are specifically in the Outlook import
file options continues ms tradition.
