This is the first time I've used this (or any) newsgroup. If I'm doing
something wrong or there's a better way/place to ask the question then please
let me know...

I have an iPaq running Office Mobile 6.1 and am getting pretty annoyed with
it. My main problem is that I don't use Office 2007 on my desktop (neither
does anyone I know) and I want to create files on my iPaq and access them on
my desktop. It doesn't seem to give me an option to "save as..." Excel
97/2000/XP format. It will open files created in that format and save them in
the same fomrat but new files are created as .xlsx.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd rather avoid having to buy another
file conversion utility...

Cheers.

Interestng- I just tried it now and noticed you're right. (I hadn't
noticed before since I generally edit pre-existing Office files on my device,
rather than new.)

The workaround is awkward, but simple enough- don't create new files with
the "new" function. Instead, sync a blank .xls document from Excel XP from
your desktop called "blank.xls," "new.xls," or whatever and open it
instead. When you save it using the "Save As" function, the option to save
as .xls is still there.

This is essentially the same workaround for another infamous WinMo Mobile
Office problem. The Windows Mobile 6 Standard dvices- mobile phones
without touchscreens have the ability to edit and view documents but not
create new ones! (They lack the "new" command!) Storing a "blank.xls,"
and "blank.doc" on the device solves the problem.

Does it work to put the blank xls file in templates and use that to
create a new file?

fwiw, if the template idea doesn't work, mark the blank xls file as
"read only" so it can't be accidentally overwritten.

Great minds (or time-addled brains?) Wink think alike!

I copied all of the templates from my trusty Axim X5. Then when I go into
"options" for Word or Excel, under "Default Template" I can select the
older format. Problem solved!

[In the interest of full disclosure, I'm using the original Office 6.1
download MS pulled after a few days. The most recent version may or may
not work the same. If a half-dozen years with Windows Mobile has taught me
one thing, it's DON'T upgrade anything if the current Version works for
you!] Wink

Good advice, as always, sir.
