Anyone using the Gizmo for mobile phone calls via the Internet (like
VOIP) - rather than using traditional cell-phone plan minutes?

I have the ATT Tilt, and used Gizmo to make a call successfully via a
local internet connection to a wi-fi router in my home.

1. Anyone using this set-up? Does it work reliably? Call quality?

2. Anyone familiar with the ATT Internet plans and whether they
adequately support this method of calling?

This could be amazing way to cut calling plan in half - and use local,
or carrier internet plan, to make calls.

Yes, I use it (very occasionally) via the built-in WM6 VoIP client
("Internet Calling") on my HTC Wizard.

Your Tilt has a much faster processor than my Wizard, so I expect it'll get
a little better quality than my Wizard, which is mediocre at best.

I'm not an AT&T user (I use T-Mobile which doesn't have 3G data.)
Theoretically it should work over 3G, unless AT&T is locking the necessary
ports to prevent customers from using VoIP.

True. I mostly use it for backup. For example, when I was in Cancun
recently, I was in a hotel with free WiFi, so the internet calling feature
using Gizmo was $0.02/minute instead of T-Mobile's $1.49/min. international
roaming rate. It's also a good backup domestically when traveling if I'm
at a hotel with free WiFi but spotty cellular coverage. I simply forward
my cell number "when unavailable" to my Gizmo number and leave WiFi on. If
I have cell service it rings in as cellular, if not it rings in seamlessly
as a WiFi call.
