Hi. My husband got a new laptop yesterday with Vista installed. We had been
told about a year ago when thinking about buying a new laptop that his phone
wouldn't work with it. Well, that was wrong.

I installed the newest version of the Microsoft Mobile Device Center and
plugged the phone in. All went well and it synched very nicely into Outlook
for him.

Now here's the question.....does the sync center have to be running in the
background all the time or can he just run it prior to doing a sync?? I ask
because even though this computer is definately faster, I'm trying to tweak
his perfomance. I don't want to screw anything up.

Not sure I can answer your question definitively but do want to point out
that Sync Center and WMDC are two distinct programs. WAD is what is needed
to sync with a Windows Mobile Device. Sync Center seems to act as a
dashboard for general sync capabilities.

Hi Sven,

Ok, I didn't realize they were 2 different programs. What exactly is WAD?
I did try to do something with his phone before I installed WMDC and it
wouldn't do a darn thing. After installing that and plugging in the
cable/phone, it found it and set things up for it and the sync center put
itself in the taskbar and is running all the time. I was hoping it was just
a simple matter of disabling it via MSCONFIG and then running it via the
control panel before he tries to sync.

Interesting defect- a keyboard that produces Freudian slips! I'm sure many
people here have accused WMDC of being a wad of something! Wink

Update: in case anyone is interested. I did disable the WMDC from running at
startup. I rebooted the computer and the Sync Center was still running. I
plugged in his phone and it popped up saying new hardware found and installed
it and then did the sync. Now at this point I had no idea what caused that.
A little later we had done something else and rebooted again. This time, the
sync center wasn't there. I plugged the phone in to test and it poped up but
it didn't work right. A menu popped up asking what you wanted to do and it
didn't have the option I wanted. I used the safely remoe hardware and tried
again. It did thing. So I did it again, re-enabled WMDC and rebooted. I
tried again and it still wouldn't work. That's when the AHHH HAAA moment hit
me. I didn't have the phone plugged into the original USB port that it had
been installed on. I moved it and all went back to normal. I decided at
that point, to leave well enough alone. It didn't speed up the boot up any
by having the WMDC disabled. I'm sure that I can disable now as long as I
remember to plug the phone into the proper USB port but since there didn't
appear to be any reduction in boot time, the heck with it.
