Wireles is working but with dificulty coming in and out all the time

New to wireless I've just gotten my Axim X51v how much more there is to wireless than I realized. In taking a quick look I see reference to b, g etc then there are several methods of connection where I had thought it was going to be wifi or bluetooth

wireless yes and no I have a acer 3020 laptop with internal Broadcom 802.11g Network card, I believe I might have made a change somewhere to cause the light button on the front to go out, the icon under network connections shows a red cross over it, says also not connected.
