Hello,

I'm trying to run the 6.1 upgrade on my phone (Cingular 8125, WM5). I have
10MB free on my phone before starting the installation. It gets to almost the
end of the installation, and fails, telling me that I don't have enough free
space, that (roughly) 7MB is required. I'm not sure what is going on here,
since I had more than enough free space. Anyone run into this issue?

Ok, I partially answered my problem. I used UniExtract to extract just the
files needed for the WM5 installation. Apparently, some temp files were
getting installed on the device during the install, even though I was running
the .MSI from my PC. the .cab install worked and now I'm running the 6.1
version of the applications. However, I went from 10MB of free space to 3MB
of free space. Shouldn't I have gained some back if the older versions of the
applications were uninstalled? I know 6.1 said it needed 7MB of free space,
but I figured it wouldn't use all of that since it would be uninstalling the
old version. How do I know if the old version is still there or is this
normal result for the 6.1 upgrade?

The old version was in your device's ROM firmware, whereas the new one is
using your storage memory. ROM-based programs (like IE, Messaging, Office
Mobile, Solitare, etc.) are "burned" in the devices ROM memory using no
storage space (at least no space that you can use.)

This is why many of us put up with the quirks of the included programs
rather than use 3rd-party apps unless the 3rd-party apps are far superior.
(Windows Media Player comes to mind- there are better MP3 players out
there, but they aren't superior enough, IMO, to justify using a few MB of
storage.)

It's still there, which is normal, and even if it could be removed, you
couldn't reuse the space it occupied.

You could add a memory card and install Office 6.1 to that, to save storage
space.

Thank you. I was wondering why I couldn't find the directories by browsing or
searching. Now it makes sense. I wanted the new Office because I use Office
2007 at work, and most of my files are in that format when possible. I did
get it installed and now have only 3MB free, but I do have a 2GB storage card
in my phone as well. I just didn't want to install it there because I'm stuck
in the "PC" world where you don't want to run programs from secondary storage
because it's always slower. I'm sure that's not true when the storage is
flash based and the programs are so small.

Thanks again.

They're in the device's Windows directory but hidd n unless you select
"Show all files" in File Explorer.

That was true in the past when the storage on WinMo devices used fast
battery-backed RAM. Today (WM5+), however, they use persistent flash memory,
so the difference is really whether you store them on slow internal flash
memory or slow external flash memory. Sort of a "six of one, half-dozen of
the other" thing...

Another thing that bit me was the 'persistent' storage of the 8525. I
thought the hard reset would clear all memory. It didn't.
It also left data, so a restore created two copies of data and applications.
Since the indexes for where the information is stored is different from the
icons in 'programs', I found a launch for software on the uSD sometimes
launched device programs.

In addition Sprite Software erroneously claimed the ability to restore data
and software after the upgrade to 6.x.

Everything needs to be cleaned with Settings/System/Clear Storage before the
reflash and restore.
