Can anyone recommend a procedure (or even just software) to convert or play
mp4 or flv files on a windows mobile 5 PDA?

You should be able to play most MPEG4 videos on PPC using TCPMP.
That's a corecodec supplied player, but their website is routinely
offline. Picard's site offers backup http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/

For flash video, you'd need to install both Flash player for pocket PC
(from the Adobe flash website) and probably some sort of video player
written in flash which allows you to load FLV files.

I'm not aware of one specifically made to run on PPC screen size which
also loads user specified video by browsing to them in the filesystem.

Thanks for your reply to that, Neil, it enabled me to finally play videos
taken on my AT&T 8525 on my desktop. I've got a new problem though, and I
was wondering if you (or anyone else out there) had any suggestions for it.
I've been trying to find a way to edit the video taken from my phone on my
desktop. So far, the only program I've found that has the capability of even
playing the video on my desktop is the one you previously recommended. As
far as I can tell, that program does not have editing capabilities. Any
suggestions?

Simple, cheap home editing software us most useful for those
situations. Ulead videostudio would probably work OK with MPEG4
http://www.ulead.com/vs/ which gets you a free trial

Lots of other options (eg Apple Quicktime Pro at about $25-30) would
also offer the same features. Exporting the video can then be achieved
to a wide range of video formats like WMV, H264 or Flash Video.

HTH

That sounds enough like what I might need that installed it on my
Cingular 8525. In my case, WMP 10 in Win Mobile 5 on the phone doesn't
like the wmv format used by my church's website. But, even with TCMP
installed, I can't find where to set it as the default player so I can
test it. How do I do that?

You have to type the path to the stream into the File Open box of
TCPMP. If you play the file in standalone media player, that should be
listed in the Properties dialog box of the playing stream.

No way to cut & paste it in WM5? Or to make TCPMP the default video
player? Actually, having looked at the properties for my church's
stream, it's win media 9 .asf. WMP 9 isn't that old that the win
mobile player (version 10) should have a problem with it.

No.

I don't know how you'd do that. You'd need to investigate a registry
editor for pocked PC to change the default file associations, eg
Philipe Majeur's http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/

So we're discussing the wrong solution for a week, since this is not
MP4 or FLV file, we were (I thought) discussing "I've been trying to
find a way to edit the video taken from my phone on my desktop"

I'll take a look at it.

Sorry. I popped into the middle of the conversation when some things
that were said seemed to relate to a problem I'm experiencing. I'm not
the op who asked about the mp4 & flv files. I probably ought to have
started a new thread.
