I am new to the Pocket PC, having, after about fifteen years, stopped
using Palm because of flaky hardware and brain-dead OS memory management
on current models.

My computer is a Mac, but I have Parallels installed so that I can use
Windows to interface with the iPAQ. I have figured out most of what I
need to know in order to download and operate programs equivalent to the
ones I had on the Palm. However, the built-in "Notes" leave me totally
puzzled.

Under "Notes", there is a list of folders that includes members such as
".trash", "Dictionaries", "My Documents", "My Music", "WMDRM", and
"Templates", the last of which actually has some templates, and two
folders, one named after a program that I downloaded, and the other
named after a program that I downloaded and then deleted. None of the
names of other programs that I have downloaded have appeared in this
folder list.

Now, except for "templates" and a couple of folders that I created, all
the other folders are empty. But, when I try to delete them, a message
appears saying that I can't delete a folder that has content, and that I
should delete the content of the folder.

While these folders are doing no harm, their presence offends my sense
of propriety, and I would love to know how to get rid of them.

Herb

Think you are confusing "notes" with the general folder setup on every ppc.

Most of the folders you mentioned hold files from all of the apps... the
local app (such as notes) shows only the files it can open... i.e.
"notes" file menu should only show .pwi and .wav files, but it will show
all folders by default.

If you open word or excel, you should see the same folders, but only
word or excel files depending on how you look. Open pocket file
explorer and you will be able to see all files.

These folders are auto generated and they should be empty on a new
device although some apps may generate files on a cold boot.

Not sure if you will be able to sync notes to a mac... depends (in part)
if you have outlook installed and if outlook for the mac can handle .pwi
files. Some versions of word can convert and open .pwi files, older
versions can't.

Even without syncing, "notes" is probably the most used of the
applications on my ppc. It is a quick and easy way to maintain lists
and notes to myself.

Especially the "handwriting" capability. In addition to allowing
extensive handwritten notes and drawings, using handwriting during
meetings with others is very unobtrusive compared to typing or tapping.

Tip... use filenames to float the most used note files to the top...
i.e. "00-Current" or "01-Shop"

Have you found a hierarchical list (BrainForest is the one I use
on my Palm)?
