I was hoping that ActiveSync would allow me to select which contact
categories I wanted to sync with my WM5 phone (Cingular 3125). The
ActiveSync settings option is always greyed out so therefore I cannot select
it to even see what settings can be made. Without this, all of my contacts
sync. While I can use a filter to only display the contacts from a
particular category, the filter must be applied every time and can not be
set as a default.
Ideas?

One way to do it is:
In Outlook create a new subfolder under the contacts folder. Select
all the contacts and drag them to the new folder so that the original
contracts folder is empty.
From the new subfolder drag and drop the contacts you want in your
phone to the old contacts folder.
Plug your phone into your computer, open up ActiveSync, and it will
sync only the contacts in the new folder.
If you don't want to sync your appointments and tasks, you have to
stop ActiveSync from sync'ing and change the settings to sync only
contacts.
After you've sync'ed, disconnect, and move all your contacts from the
newly created subfolder back to the contacts folder.

Thanks, but my contacts list is dynamic and I'd rather not have to perform
this process frequently. Wish there was a way to tell ActiveSync which
categories to sync and/or have the WM5 device set a default filter.
Does the ActiveSync settings command do nothing?

Currently there are no active sync settings around contacts, which is why
the button always appears greyed out when you have contacts selected. In
the mean time David's suggestion is probably your best bet. Your feedback
is definitely noted though
Thanks!

this is ridiculous!!! i am having the exact same problem and there must
be a solution...i used to have a motorola mpx220 running an older
version of windows mobile. i think i was using activesync 3.8(?) and
guess what --- it allowed me to select which contacts i wanted to sync
from outlook. how could the newer versions not allow this? i have the
same issue you do, i don't want 1000+ contacts in my personal phone and
creating subfolders, etc. just is not practical.
someone, somewhere must know how to "ungrey" the settings button!
please stay in touch as i am determined to find a solution.

david- i am new to this forum as i have been searching all over for a
way to "select" the contacts to sync...in your thread, there was a
reply from "chani Johnson" of microsoft. i cannot seem to find a way
to email/post a reply to him. the fact that the older version allowed
you to change the settings means there must be a way to now...how can i
contact Chani? thanks

I checked with my colleagues in active sync and was told that in the (much)
older version of active sync there was an option to filter what contacts you
would sync, and this was applicable only with syncing to a particular
desktop (not an exchange server).
However, sync is done in an entirely different way now, and that option is
simply not available any more. We know that this is a common user request
and it is certainly something we are thinking about.
As it stands now, in order to not sync a set of your contacts you would need
to put them in another folder. I'm sorry I don't have better news for you.

Chani, how about just restoring the ability to Synch ANY contacts? My wife
and I both have Cingular 3125 phones and Outlook 2003. I could sync all my
contacts - the feature was greyed out in her ActiveSync. So, I upgraded from
4.2 to 4.5 on her computer. No difference. I stupidly upgraded from 4.2 to
4.5 on my laptop and now the ONLY things I can sync are Calendar, E-mail and
Favorites.. Contacts disappeared from the list of options. And when I
right-click on Tasks, Options is greyed out.
I did delete "Desktop Computer" so Email would show up on my laptop
settings, but that seemed to also remove the option to sync Contacts. The
Settings option is still greyed out on my wife's Contacts icon. What gives?

Guess the programmers at MS are much more the internet generation than I, as
the "much older" version that supported filters on contacts, calendar etc.
was AS3.8. Actually they are still available today if you connect a pre-WM5
device to AS4.x.

It's ridiculous that your collegues would actually think this is a REAL
viable solution for heavy Outlook users.. I have over 1000 contacts but only
NEED to carry a fraction (200) of those contacts with me on my phone.. On my
MX220 I was able to do this using categories.. It's ridiculous that MS would
RANDOMLY, for no good reason "decide" that this feature was no longer needed
when it's been a feature in Active Synch for YEARS.. You guys have got to be
doing MOPRE than just thinking about it.. You need to restore this feature..

I agree, and it looks like the issue is something to do with this phone in
particular.. I had both my old MPX220 and my 3125 partnered with Active Synch
and the ability to filter contacts was available on my MPX220 but greyed out
on the 3125..
I find it ridiculous that a program such as Outlook and devices like the
Windows SmartPhones (both of which are designed to aid in productivity
efficiency) would have such a counter productive feature and follow it up
with such a pithy "solution" (which is more correctly typed as a
"workaround") as the answer to this problem. Shame shame... I have already
had to dowload the Windows Mobile registry editor to "fix" some thing I used
to be able to acces via the phone interface (namely changing the device name
to something I choose)
I shudder to think what other features I'm going to discover I no longer
have or no longer have straight forward access to..

Right. Apparently I've trained myself to think of time in terms of lines of

Actually, I can't think of anyone who thinks this is a viable solution - it
is definitely a work around. And it isn't a pleasant one, we want to fix
it.
We definitely didn't remove the feature randomly, nor decide that it wasn't
needed. It actually came out when we switched to exchange (i.e. over the
air) sync because of the technical limitations of that move. We understand
that there is still a need for this sort of functionality, and we hear lots
of user feedback that says the same.
I totally undertsand that this is a huge inconvenience for users. We are
customers too, and it's always really painful when features you care about
aren't supported. I absolutely understand and appreciate your passion
around this feature.
