Hello, I have a symbol MC50 device and have found that if the main battery
runs dead for more than 15 minutes the backup battery will then fail as well.
I will loose all of my settings and configurations, i.e. it performs a "cold
boot". Symbol offers an application that will copy my registry settings from
the device to a persistent storage location, where data can be retained after
a cold boot. For the most part this has worked fine. I have been able to
retain wireless configuration and the Today Item selections...
However I have found that some important settings are not stored in
the registry? 2 things, the Menu and Button configurations are apparently
not stored in the registry? Symbol has informed me that trying to backup
these settings is a question for Microsoft. I thought I might post it here
incase someone has run into the same thing and found a workaround or solution.
How can I save the settings for my Menu selections and Button configurations?

Thank you,
Ryan Jennings

first, if the backup battery fails 15 min after the main battery fails,
I would suspect that a background process is running when the device is
"off" (actually suspended) or the backup battery is dead

know you don't need to hear it, but backup, backup, backup... there are
several good full backup programs which backup everthing in ram to a
memory card... spb and sprite are at the top of the list.

Thank you for the response. So do...spb and sprite backup all of the system
settings? I reason I ask is because according to Symbol the settings I want
to save (Menu and Button config) are not stored in the registry? Have you
ever used these apps to backup and restore these settings?

Essentially, following a cold boot, installation of the backup and
restore, you will have essentially an identical copy of your device at
the time of the last backup. (you will want to keep a copy of the backup
program's cab on the memory card marked as read only, so you can be back
in business a few minutes after a cold boot when mobile)

I say "essentially" as the cold boot process generates a number of files
in ram such as the startmenu's shortcuts, so, if you have deleted or
renamed some of the originals, you will have a few additional files
after a restore.

The "start menu" and "button" information are primarily directories
which contain shortcuts... obviously, the registry will contain the
association of the button to the shortcut, so, you gotta have both. Not
sure if the "menu" you reference is the default ppc menu or a symbol
menu program.

Sprite has saved my butt on a number of occasions on a number of
different pc's since it was introduced shortly after the ppc debuted.
